I have just returned from a solo cinema date to see Mamma Mia 2 and wanted to write-up my thoughts. I don’t know how to write this without giving too many spoilers and keep it vague. Overall, the film was good but didn’t live up to the first one, but then again the first one was so good! I’ll do the good, the bad and the ugly.
The film follows Sophie as she is rebuilding the hotel following on from her mum’s plans. It also flashes back and tells the story of the summer that Donna conceived Sophie and met her 3 dads. Featuring another all-star cast – Amanda Siegfried, Christine Baranski, Piers Brosnan, Julie Walters, Lilly Collins and Meryl Streep and Cher, although more on that later!
The Good – The things I liked
The Singing – Of course, this is the one reason why Mamma Mia is such a great film franchise. The singing, even the bad singers, makes the film. Although there was less of the gimmicky singing and more focus on Amanda Siegfried and Lilly Collins (who plays the young Donna) who both have incredible voices and really shone through in the film which was great to see.
The Feel Good Factor – The overall feel-good factor you get after watching a musical is definitely there. In fact, I came out of the cinema and got into my car and they were playing Working My Way Back To You on the radio and sung my wee heart out. Then when I got home I was dancing around channeling my inner Mamma Mia extra. So you know that’s always a good Friday feeling. The films choreography is amazing!
The Bad – The things I didn’t like so much
The Songs – The first film pretty much featured all of Abba’s main hits. I get that. So that meant that there were so many new songs to me in this film. Okay, granted when you first see a musical you don’t know all the songs but you learn to love them and ultimately there were some great songs. My issue was a lot of them were quite ballad like and I dunno I prefer more of the dancing Abba songs. I am sure with a second watch I will love them.
The Missing Cast Members – I had real issues with this. The promotion and trailer for this film show a lot of Cher and Meryl Streep. I hate to break it to you Meryl Streep and Cher are hardly in it. They are in the film for 2 songs. I was disappointed at this because Cher has literally been everywhere promoting this film and she’s hardly in it! Can we also just mention that she plays Meryl Streep’s mother. Meryl Streep is 3 years younger than Cher! It makes no sense!
Also, many of the other main cast members are not in a lot of the film. It has a bit of an air of ‘we were too busy filing other more important things but we’ll pop in and film a few scenes for Mamma Mia 2’. I felt a little cheated at this.
The fact it made me cry on several parts. Imagine sitting alone in the cinema crying into your Cheese Toastie. That was pretty ugly.
Overall, I would say it was good but incomparable to the first Mamma Mia! I suggest you listen to the soundtrack before you go to get a jist of the songs and wear waterproof mascara/ take tissues. I found myself very much like Julie Walters in the film and felt myself welling up quite often.
Look out for Bennie and Bjorn from Abba who both make cameo appearances in this film too!
