My 2018 Pledge: Read More

You may have read already that I am not doing aims, goals or New Years resolutions. I am making 5 pledges to myself just to be a better version of myself. So here we are with Pledge 1: Read More.

2017 Review

Last year I gave myself on GoodReads the target of 25 Books in the year. This was after the year before where I read 39/40. 39 Books in a year are pretty impressive until you look at the list and realise there’s  a lot of short stories, travel guides, children’s book. Also, I was off work for 3 months so had a lot of time. This year I have only managed 11/25 which is actually quite an impressive bearing in mind I’ve moved house and jobs twice! So averaging at just under 1 book a month is pretty good for me, but I am slightly disheartened it’s only 44%. I even started a book club to try read more. It didn’t really work but was nice to have some reading buds.

Of the 11 books I read my highlights were: This Must Be The Place by Maggie Farrell, The Versions of Us by Laura Barnett and The Circle by Dave Eggers.

2018 To Be Read

This brings us on to my 2018 to be read. I am not going to give myself a number, I am just going to read more. I want to dedicate more time to reading. I want to discover more of a range of genres too, I am a bit stuck in a rut. I found the POPSUGAR Reading Challenge which may come in helpful.

Pop Sugar Reading Challenge - 2018 -

I mean there’s no way I’ll get all the way through this, but a few would be good. I have a few books I want to read this year – including Mythos by Stephen Fry, The Power by Naomi Alderman and finish Animal by Sara Pascoe. I am sure throughout the year I will update you on my reading progress.

One way I am planning on getting more books read is through listening to Audiobooks. I have a 3 hour daily commute and so I normally listen to the radio on the way to work but on the way home I listen to Podcasts or Audiobooks. These make the time pass really quickly and sometimes I am a little bit sad when I get home as I was really enjoying a part of it. I get my books from Amazon Audible, your first month is free if you sign up here, then for £7.99 you get a book a month. This ranges from classics to new releases so is quite good value at £7.99.  I am currently listening to Reveal by Robbie Williams, the guy who is narrating it does all the accents and voices. It’s like you are listening in to Robbie Williams life.

Ongoing Reading Challenge

Alongside the PopSugar challenge, I also have a list of 100 classic books that you should have read. I have only read 11 of them, and one of them is the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Not exactly taxing reading. So I am hoping to maybe this year attempt some of the titles from the list. Think I’ll start with Winnie the Pooh!

So there we have it. My 2018 Reading Pledge. Maybe I’ll read more than 11, maybe not. Time will tell. Please leave me your reading recommendations and links to any reviews you’ve written.

  1. I’m always hoping to read as much as I can during the year. I usually give myself a number for the Goodreads challenge, but it’s not a big deal if I don’t hit it. I know eventually I’ll have less and less time to read as I find a full time job, etc. I review a lot of books on my blog if you ever want to browse! Book bloggers in general are usually full of great ideas – I get a lot of book recs from other bloggers.
