Edinburgh Festival Village – The Place to Be!

Edinburgh is buzzing at the moment! I love it! Yes, the increased traffic, people, crowds and bar prices are slightly annoying but also the influx of culture, cheap entertainment and pop up bars compensates for that! Locals to Edinburgh may have noticed the ‘pop up’ Irish Bar on top of Princes Mall. In fact, every time I have walked past Malones has always been buzzing, with people, live music and the smells of amazing food!

I was super excited in the lead up to the Fringe that there seemed to be more and more bars and pop up eatieres opening on top of the mall. This is the area known as the ‘Festival Village’ and is the place to be this festival, with something for everyone. Last Friday after work I went down to meet my husband for some food and drinks here and here’s my summary of what was there!

Butcher Boy

Described on their website as:

Meat & Beer is what this place does best. If locally brewed craft beer is your thing then look no further! These guys have a rotating drinks menu ensuring customers get the chance to try as many of Scotland’s home brews as possible. The Butcher Boy’s grill opens from
9am daily with breakfast and burgers the main order of the day. But don’t take our word for it…try it for yourself.

The Butcher Boy is more laid back, a big BBQ and lots of beer to choose from. Perfect for drinks with friends, sampling local craft beers and perhaps a bite to eat. My husband ordered a ‘Dirty Burger’ – A Burger with Candied Bacon, Caramelised Onions and Gherkins. It looked and tasted delicious!

Fizz and Pearl

This is where I headed straight for. Fizz and Pearl were the ‘posher’ area. Featuring a Moet and Chandon Champagne Bar,  a Bombay Sapphire Gin Bar and a fresh seafood eatery. This was table service and there was a great atmosphere, especially with the disco tunes they were blasting out! Perfect for a Friday night feeling!  It, unfortunately, started raining when I was there and so the waitresses came round with blankets and umbrellas to everyone.

I had a glass of Champagne which was lovely! And perfect to sit and sip and people watch – my ultimate favorite past time! I ordered the seafood linguine from the specials menu and was presented with a massive bowl of pasta and fresh seafood – including prawns and mussels. It was so delicious, so much food!

The Bombay Sapphire Gin bar served lots of different cocktails but also recommended serves. I always go for a recommended serve over a cocktail at a restaurant as sometimes the cocktails drown out the flavor of the alcohol. I tried the Star of Bombay spiced gin which was beautiful! As well as a Bombay Sapphire with peppercorns. I love gin served with peppercorns, it really does bring out the spice and citrus flavours. Fizz and Pearl is the perfect place to sit in the sun, order some drinks with friends and put the world to rights!

There is so much more happening that I didn’t see at the Festival Village. I am definitely going to go back and check out Malones and M2 which both have live music stages to enjoy and soak up the atmosphere! I do hope that this because a regular summer feature as it is perfect for the sunny days in Edinburgh, taking a break from shopping or stopping in here before catching a train. Pricewise it is as you would expect for a city centre pub/bar/ restaurant although I would say the quality of the food is much better than a lot of the places in the city centre! There’s still plenty of time to go and check it out before the Summer is over!
